Congratulations to Liam Averill, our 2026 Mark Loane Medallist. Liam received the medal from Dr Mark Loane AM, former Wallaby captain and legend of the game, at our NYC Benefit Dinner.

The medal is named in Dr Loane’s honour. It identifies an emerging US rugby talent and gives them the opportunity to travel to Australia, become part of the Red Heavies and develop their game, along with the experience of a lifetime. Past medallists have gone on to play for the USA Eagles and in Major League Rugby.

Liam is a New York City local, a graduate of Xavier High School and now plays for Penn State University. His highlights so far:
Three years in the Xavier A-side, co-captain in his senior year, and three New York State High School Championships
Selection in the Goff Rugby Report All-Tournament team at No. 7 at the High School National Tournament

The 2026 Nigel Milton Award for Rugby, given to Xavier’s top rugby player selection for the 2026 USA U18 tour of South America, playing Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina.

Liam will join the Red Heavies in Brisbane for a playing stint during the 2027 season, and we can’t wait to welcome him into the UQ Rugby family.
Congratulations Liam!
