Trish Brown In Wallaroos Squad
University fullback, women's World Cup Sevens winner and player of the tournament at this year's national championships, Trish Brown, has been selected for Australia's World Cup qualifier against Samoa.
Brown is one of three Queenslanders selected in the Wallaroos squad of 24 that will travel to Apia for the match on Friday, August 7.
It has been a remarkable year for Brown, who featured in the team that won the Sevens World Cup in Dubai in March and was a standout for the championship-winning Queensland team at the recent national titles, being voted player of the tournament.
Brown made her international debut against South Africa in the 2006 Women's Rugby World Cup in Canada, scoring three tries on debut and five during the tournament.
The 2010 World Cup is in England and New Zealand has already qualified as one of two representatives from Oceania, with the match between Australia and Samoa to decide who will join them.
Brown expects a tough, physical match against the Samoan women, who Australia beat in last year's qualifiers for the Sevens.
"They're (Samoa) very competitive and I think they'll be well suiited to the 15s game," said Brown.
"I think we can expect a very physical encounter.
"There's only one spot up for grabs to get to that World Cup next year so they're going to want to be there just as much as we will."
At 30, Brown said she's regarded as one of the senior players in the team and is enjoying the responsibility.
"I've been classified as a bit of an 'old head' around the team now, so (I take pride in) that ability to guide the younger ones around the park and really help them to slot in to the squad and the team quite easily both on and off the field.
"I'm sort of the mouth and eyes of the team (at fullback) giving them direction on where to go and what to do. Fortunately for me I've got a mouth and I don't mind talking a bit - all positive of course."
Brown is also enjoying herself on the field which may be a result of her blistering form in 2009.
"I'm loving it. You always enjoy it when you're playing some good footy which I'm fortunate enough to be doing at the moment," said Brown.
